Diodes, Inc. Introduces Innovative New Product Platform of Application Specific Complex Arrays

Jul 27, 2005

Line of Complex Arrays Provide Relay Driver and Voltage Regulator

Functionality in Cost-Effective, Single Package Solutions

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Diodes Incorporated, (Nasdaq: DIOD), a leading manufacturer and supplier of high quality discrete semiconductors, today announced the introduction of a new product platform featuring two series of application specific complex arrays.

Designed to bridge the gap between more costly Analog IC and multi-package discrete solutions typical for Voltage Regulation and Relay Driving functions, Diodes' new application specific complex arrays provide cost effective single package solutions. Including a line of Relay Drivers DRDxxxxW and Voltage Regulators DVRxVxW, these devices combine multiple discrete elements into a single package, enabling circuit designers to save valuable PCB (printed circuit board) area and cut component and placement costs.

"This new product platform is another significant step in our ongoing quest for continued miniaturization with an eye on customer needs using multi-chip packaging integration. Our customers will benefit from these compact, cost-cutting, no-frills arrays by eliminating the complexity of multiple packages, and by gaining more flexibility in their product design," said Dr. Keh-Shew Lu, President and CEO.

The complex arrays for Relay Driving integrate a robust suppression/recovery diode and a BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor) to provide fast and reliable control of a wide variety of relays. The integration of the suppression diode provides both protection to the BJT from inductor coil discharge and faster relay switching, effectively minimizing contact arcing and significantly increasing relay life and reliability. Available with pre-biased BJTs, this new series offers a 4-to-1-component part reduction providing an excellent combination of performance, flexibility, and space and cost savings over traditional discrete solutions. The complex arrays for Relay Driving are primarily intended for the industrial and consumer electronics markets for HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) controls, power distribution control, security/access systems, and motor control circuitry.

Diodes' new complex arrays for Voltage Regulation combine specially paired BJT and Zener discrete elements to provide an optimal balance of precise voltage regulation and low quiescent current. Compatible with 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, and 5.0V logic level circuits, these devices provide circuit designers the flexibility to configure as Series or Shunt regulators capable of sourcing or sinking up to 100mA of load current with exceptionally precise voltage regulation as compared to the discrete multi-package circuits commonly used. They offer a low cost alternative to Analog ICs and are ideal for use in space-constrained consumer electronics, including laptop computers, mobile electronics (PDAs, MP3 players, mobile phones, digital cameras, etc.), battery chargers, computer peripherals, disk drives, and network equipment (routers, hubs, etc.).

"This new application specific array platform exhibits Diodes' dedication to provide our global customers with complete design solutions by pushing the envelope of discrete integration with compact, cost-cutting arrays," said Mark King, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Diodes, Inc. "Leveraging the flexibility provided by this platform, Diodes is developing additional integrated solutions, including Power Management switches and higher performance Voltage Regulators, further underscoring our position as an innovation leader in the discrete market."

In continuing Diodes' theme for environmentally friendly packages, the complete platform is constructed with 100% matte tin lead-free plating and green molding compound for RoHS compliance.
