Diodes Incorporated Introduces Synchronous Controller Optimized for External Power Adapters

Oct 21, 2008

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Diodes Incorporated (NASDAQ:DIOD), a leading global manufacturer and supplier of application specific standard products within the broad discrete and analog semiconductor markets, today announced the introduction of a dedicated synchronous controller for driving MOSFETs to perform as 'ideal diodes' in synchronous flyback converters employed in external power adapters, servers, LCD monitors and set top boxes.

The ZXGD3101 is the first in a new family of products using the 'zero point detector driver' (ZPDD) platform. This innovative device is simpler and more robust than competing synchronous controller ICs, thus providing a lower cost solution to potential users. ZXGD3101 requires the support of only three external passive components and produces source as well as sink currents up to 2.5A. The 180V blocking capability ensures reliable operation, and the proportional gate drive improves the turn-off time to minimize shoot through, as well as prevent premature turn-off of, the MOSFET at low loads.

The ZXGD3101 enables designers to replace Schottky diodes with surface mount MOSFETs, which improves efficiency up to four percent, reduces device temperature up to 30 degrees C and provides the option to reduce the size and weight of the overall power supply solution.

Industry initiatives such as Energy Star V2 and the European Code of Conduct V3, effective November 1, 2008 and January 1, 2009, respectively, are driving for improved efficiency in end equipment. For example, to be compliant with these initiatives, adapters must be at least 87 percent efficient. Diodes' rectifier controller helps achieve this target.

Market sources estimate that there are 1.5 billion external power adapters in use in the United States. Energy Star estimates that the energy consumed is around 207 billion kilowatt-hours per year and believes that there is the potential to reduce this figure by 5 billion kilowatt-hours per year through operational improvements in efficiency and standby power. This is the equivalent of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 4 million tons or by taking 800,000 cars off the road.

The ZXGD3101 incorporates a high voltage comparator stage and a high current driver in the compact SM8 package. This product is designed to be compatible with Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) and Discontinuous Mode (DCM) operation, thereby ensuring that optimum efficiency is achieved across the full load range of the power supply.

The synchronous MOSFET controller from Diodes is supported by a 'plug-and-play' evaluation board, enabling fast evaluation in existing power adaptor designs.
